Pilates for Teens

teens in pilates class

PhysILATES for teens is a fun weekly Pilates class for secondary school young adults, run by a certified athletic therapist at our YOUtherapies studio in Ennis. Pilates is a low impact, mind-body type of exercise designed to optimize physical fitness and aid in injury prevention.

Who is Pilates for Teens suitable for?

Pilates is suitable for all fitness levels and body shapes! At YOUtherapies we find that Pilates for teens really suits those teens that consider themselves to be ‘not sporty’ or maybe don’t play on a traditional sports team like GAA or soccer. The classes are run in a fun, non-judgemental and non-competitive environment – our studio is airy, bright, not intimidating and private which seems to suit those who consider themselves to be ‘not sporty’!

And, conversely you may be surprised to hear that Pilates is really beneficial for sports mad teens too! Teens that play team sports, tennis or golf; swim; engage in dance or ballet etc really benefit from Pilates too through learning good exercise technique, core strength, balance and control, and enhancing sports performance and helping prevent injuries. Do you know that premier league soccer and elite rugby and GAA players and dancers include Pilates as part of their training regime to prevent injuries?!

What are the benefits of Pilates for teens classes?

  • Fun, non-judgemental and non-competitive environment – our studio is airy, bright, not intimidating and private!
  • Build core and general strength
  • Improve flexibility – particularly helpful during growth spurts
  • Improve stability, balance and co-ordination
  • Improve posture (are they slouching and scrolling on devices a lot?) and boost body awareness
  • Learn correct breathing techniques
  • Stress relief
  • Boost body confidence and self-esteem
  • In school-aged children, physical activity can lead to better academic achievement, increased attention span and improved behaviour.
  • They can come to the class with friends! So, they will have fun, feel more comfortable and research shows that buddy systems lead to improved exercise adherence.
  • Developing good, positive habits around physical activity when we are young which can stay with us and progress through our lifetime for maximum health and function.

Do you know that too many teen girls drop out of sport?!

There has been significant and concerning research findings in recent years when looking at girls sport/physical activity participation and drop-out rates. A recent Sport Ireland research project reported that:

  • 30% fewer girls are involved in sports at secondary school level than in primary school.
  • while girls and boys have similar sports participation levels at primary school (girls 94%, boys 89%), almost one-third fewer girls take physical exercise at post-primary level (girls 65%, boys 79%).
  • by the age of 13-15 many girls have labelled themselves “not sporty” and are living by this label.
  • the most powerful barrier that prevents inactive girls from taking part in sport and physical activity is not feeling good enough to join in!
  • Report shows there aren’t enough opportunities for girls to take part and have carefree fun with friends while being active.

Alarmingly a UNESCO study in 2024 reported that 49% of adolescent girls drop out of sports participation and that 85% of adolescent females are insufficiently active!!
